I am back passing along another lesson I have absorbed through years of poring over good design. I am no professional, and these are not firm rules, just observations of things I have seen repeatedly that seem to work at elevating a room.

Just like I addressed the importance of creating a balance in THIS POST, today I want to address another area to consider when you feel like your space just doesn’t feel quite where you want it to be. I am talking about the power that neutrals can have in a space. More specifically, I am talking about black and white. Now, when I say black and white, you might conjure up images of an eighties-style modern room with black leather sofas, checkerboard pillows, and chrome. Or something like the picture below. That’s not it.

ALL-Black-and-White-Room-EXAMPLE

Let me show you some gorgeous spaces of all different styles and tastes and how they use black and white to enhance the room. See if you can spot where what elements they used to harness the power of black and white:

What black and white does is break up the color and let your eyes take a break. It’s creates “visual breathing room”. Oftentimes, we get a lot of midtones in a space and although we are really drawn to certain colors, sometimes too much of a good thing is not a good thing.  Even if you venture out to include a few other colors that you like, but keep them in the same midtone level, it can start to feel a little muddy or blah. Adding some black and white can bring in that pop of contrast to counteract that effect.

As for the actual black and white colors, they can vary to suit your taste a bit. White doesn’t necessarily need to be a bright white. It could be a cream or off-white as well, just as long as the contrast is there. Black doesn’t necessary need to be true black. It could be charcoal from a pencil drawing, or it could be an oil rubbed bronze finish on your curtain rods. As long as it still reads as black.

In my opinion, some easy ways to add contrast through black and white would be refreshing the pillows on your couch hanging a print that has a nice large white mat and a slim black frame. Or, if you have built-in bookcases, adding some vases or decorative objects. Especially if they are wood. I put together a selection of items that could do the trick if you are looking for ideas for how to sprinkle a dose of black and white in your home. Hopefully these will get your wheels turning. You may see a few of these pop up at my house soon 🙂 Sources and links are in the caption.

Do you have a room that could use a dose of black and white? It won’t be your solution every time and for every room, but if you find your space looking a bit muddled or blah, give it a try!

Ever since reading THIS book (and THIS one too), I have been sold that a good life thrives on the foundation of our daily habits. Habits are the building blocks that make up our days and lives. I have good habits that I rely on, such as: eating breakfast daily, getting 8+ hours of sleep every night, not watching television, & exercising before the day begins. At the same time, I am very aware that I am being held back by many of my bad habits such as: reading too many blogs, looking at my phone too much, and not being able to give up my morning coffee to name a few. Just as I can see the positive effects my good habits have on my life, the bad ones also have a negative effect.

Because of this fascination, I was chomping at the bit to read Gretchen Rubin’s newest book, “Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives”. You may have already picked up that I am a bit of a Gretchen Rubin groupie. I really relate to her because we are wired very similarly. Every time she shares one of her idiosyncrasies, I always want to say “Me too, Gretchen!” I loved her book “The Happiness Project” from several years ago. Her new podcast “Happier with Gretchen Rubin”, is on my weekly must-listen rotation.  I could tell from listening to her podcast that this book was going to provide me with a framework to help me address the pesky habits I am having a hard time dealing with.

While The Power of Habit was a mind-blowing when it came to the influence of habits in our lives, and Daily Rituals underscored how renowned artists harnessed this power to create their body of work, this book is all about helping you figure out what makes you tick so you can select strategies for implementing good habits and breaking bad ones.

In Better Than Before, Rubin points out that the key to establishing good habits and breaking bad habits has to do entirely with finding the right approach for your personality type. She spends the beginning of the book outlining different personality types and preferences. Her theory is that the more you know yourself and your quirks, the more likely you are to set up a habit strategy that works for YOU. Some of these are easy to identify with, others require some reflection.

Her biggest breakthrough concept has to do with identifying the 4 different habit tendencies. According to Rubin, the Four Tendencies categorize how people tend to respond to expectations (inner expectations and outer expectations):

Upholders respond readily to outer and inner expectations (I’m an Upholder, 100%)
Questioners question all expectations; they’ll meet an expectation if they think it makes sense–essentially, they make all expectations into inner expectations
Obligers meet outer expectations, but struggle to meet expectations they impose on themselves
Rebels resist all expectations, outer and inner alike

The reason this is so important, is so you can set yourself up for success. Depending on your tendency, you are either going to respond to an expectation or not. For example, an Obliger responds to outer expectations. For them, getting up to work out by themselves every morning will be a challenge. But, if they have to meet a friend at a specific time to exercise, then they will follow-through. If you are a Questioner that wants to eat in a more healthful way, you may need to dive into some research to get a full understanding so that you can truly embrace the habit.

Identifying others’ tendencies is also important so that you can understand them better. You may be frustrated by the fact that your friend refuses to participate in your recommendations of things that work for you, but then you realize she is probably a Rebel. It helps not take things so personally. She can’t help it.

I knew immediately from reading this chapter that I am an Upholder. Upholders want to know the expectations, and once it is clear, just do it. Upholders are fascinated by cultivating personal habits, and are also good at setting aside time for themselves as sacred. If you know me, you will know this is true. I often go to bed before my kids because my sleep is very important to me. I think I do have a bit of Questioner though. I sometimes resist following the rules if I don’t agree with them or they do not make sense to me.

The book goes into detail with all of the tendencies and gives many examples and scenarios for each one. Rubin also talks about the downsides to each tendency. In my case, as an Upholder, one of the downsides is rigidness. So basically, a hard time changing courses when I see the clear path. If you would like to know what Tendency you are, Gretchen Rubin’s website has a handy little QUIZ you can take.

After the Four Tendencies, she also gets into other areas that are good to know about yourself so that setting yourself up for successful habits-making or breaking is easier. Who doesn’t like to answer questions like these? Here are some of my favorites:

Am I a Lark or an Owl? Me: Lark!

Am I an UnderBuyer or Overbuyer? Me: Underbuyer!

Am I a Simplicity Lover or Abundance Lover? Me: Simplicity Lover!

Am I a Familiarity Lover or Novelty Lover? Me: Novelty Lover!

See, isn’t that fun?? Once you really have a handle on your tendency and preferences, you are at a great point to start figuring out how you can best implement good habits. This is just the very beginning of the book. The rest of it is spent identifying good strategies for habit-setting as well as loopholes to watch out for.

I very much agreed with her chapter on setting up a good foundation for habits. Probably because they are the areas that I already am extra enthusiastic (nerdy) about. In her words:

From my observation, habits in four areas do most to boost feelings of self-control, and in this way strengthen the Foundation of all our habits. We do well to begin by tackling the habits that help us to:

1. sleep

2. move

3. eat and drink right

4. unclutter

It makes sense that a good sense of well-being is a fantastic place to start. Go Gretchen!

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It has helped me really take a look at my current habits and is helping me brainstorm some strategies for the pesky bad habits I am trying to address. Being such an avid listener of the Happier podcast, I felt like I already knew the Four Tendencies very well, and many of the strategies. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to figure out how to incorporate more good habits as well as get rid of the bad ones. However, if you are not likely to pick up the book, try out the podcast! You will learn so much. And please feel free to chat with me about it because as you can tell, habits are my jam.

What about you..have you seen the power of habit in your life? What habits are you trying to address?

It’s been a while since I’ve posted a home tour, and today I am so happy to be able to share a neighborhood home just down the street from where I live. The Weldon family lives in this inviting and sophisticated house. Weezie Weldon has a love for design and is extremely talented. This passion is reflected within the walls of her cozy family home. This is the kind of house that feels like a very stylish warm hug.

When I came to take the photos a few weeks ago, I realized that Weezie is definitely a kindred spirit. We talked decor and furnishings like someone might talk about the latest episode of The Bachelor or Real Housewives. She is so down-to-earth, sharp and very kind. I know you will see that reflected in her words below.

Who lives in this home and how long have you been here?: My husband Daniel and our 3 children Georgia, McCall, & Luke. We’ve lived in our home almost 6 years.

You’re home has so much character. What do you think it says about you?: I’ve always hoped for and wanted to create a home that has welcome, warmth, and an artsy flare.

Do you have a specific approach for furnishing and decorating your home?: If I’m decorating a room then I usually start with a jumping off piece. However, I’m fickle and love to change and rearrange things over time to give a fresh look. I usually like a very neutral but layered and light-filled look.

Where do you find home inspiration and ideas?: I’ve gotten a good bit of help from Cass Retz (a local interior designer). She’s amazing with color choices and has such a cool style. Many times I will seek her opinion (especially before large purchases or renovations) and she’s helped me a lot with paint colors too. I also love to browse home magazines and Pinterest for ideas and inspiration.

How would you describe your aesthetic/style?: Right now I’m into somewhat of a coastal vibe. I’ve always loved tons of natural light and a neutral base with accents of color. I really love art and eclectic pieces. I’m drawn to creating warmth, welcome and comfortable spaces.

What traits draw you to others’ homes?: Lots of light, character, and anything unexpected or eclectic.

Which room in your home do love the most?: My favorite room right now is Luke’s room! I spend a good deal of time in there while feeding him and it has the best view of our back yard. I had a lot of fun putting his room together and find it cozy and relaxing. I really do enjoy most of the rooms in our home though. We use all of our spaces on a daily basis which I love as well.

What do you splurge on in your home? Where have you saved? I’ve splurged on a few statement pieces like the large book case in our family room that Cass had recommended, light fixtures/lamps, and bedding to name a few. I’ve saved on things like dressers for my kids rooms I found at thrift stores and repainted them. I’ve also made all of my kids’ headboards. I love finding throw pillows, blankets and decorative accents at HomeGoods!

How do you hope your kids will remember their home when they are older?: I really hope they ultimately remember it as a place that radiated warmth, love, and creativity and a place they really loved & enjoyed!

Thank you, Weezie, for sharing your home with us! If you missed my prior home tours, check them out HERE and HERE.

Now that Becca’s living space has been transformed with the power of paint, the next step is to bring in a little bit of color and pattern. The walls, cabinets, drapes and flooring are all neutrals, which is a perfect jumping off point for adding the next layer.

The next biggest “bang for your buck” in the space will be addressing the leather couches.  Becca has two large brown leather couches. Like many people, she doesn’t necessary love them, but they are comfortable and perfectly functional. Replacing the couches is not on the top of the priority list right now. That’s okay though. One very easy way to change the look and feel of large leather couches is through throw pillows.

It’s important that when choosing a fabric for a pillow, that you start with something that you absolutely love. Whether it be colors that really speak to you, or a particular design, don’t overthink it. Just go with what speaks to you. Then, use that as your jumping off point to bring in other supporting fabric patterns.

To get her wheels turning, I put together some rough mock-ups for Becca to see what effect adding this next layer could have in her family’s space. I also Photoshopped in a new lamp shade because to bring in some of the crisp white into the side of the room.

Option #1: You might recall that this floral pillow fabric below was the one I included in her initial moodboard from several months back. It is so gorgeous. I still absolutely love it for the space. And I wish there was somewhere I could put it in my house 🙂

Option #2: That John Robshaw Print on the larger pillows is one of my favorites. The colors and design are so fresh. The pop of chartreuse in the square velvet pillows is a bit daring, but still not too crazy. It also balances nicely off of the color of the couches.

Option #3: I love, love the duck print fabric. Especially in Becca’s home, since her husband is such an outdoorsman. It is elegant, but not stuffy. And I love the colors in there. She can pull in pops of that coral/paprika, which would be a nice warming element to the cool tones in her space.

Do you have a favorite? Have you tried this approach on your leather couch?

Becca will be hitting up L&S Fabrics in Atlanta soon, where she will no doubt find some incredible fabric options to inspire her. Hopefully she will find one “wow” choice that she can use as her jumping off point. I think the most important thing for her to keep in mind is:

  • Find a fabric that has several colors in it; like 3 or 4.
  • Find a fabric that is not too cool.
  • Find a fabric that has great texture – like linen or a linen blend – to offset the shiny nature of the couches.

I will be sure to check back in once she has made her selections. Have a great weekend!

Do you remember a while back when I told you about my friend Becca’s home refresh project on THIS POST? Well, I thought I would give you a little update on the changes she has made since then.

You may recall that Becca wanted a lighter, brighter space. She had a lot of brown going on. She recently had her main living space painted. She also had her kitchen cabinets painted white and swapped out her drapes. You are about to see the transformative power of paint.

Doesn’t it look so much better with the new paint color? In case you are wondering, the color is Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl lightened by 50%. This is really a great example of how you can create balance in temperature like I mentioned in THIS POST. Before, everything was warm. The paint added a huge dose of cool and the difference is dramatic.

You will also notice that she swapped the burlap valances with white drapes. These are the same ones that she used in her sunroom, so she knew that she liked them. Plus, they are super affordable because they are from IKEA.

Here you can see the kitchen cabinets as they were before. They were fine, good quality cabinets, but just didn’t help add to the brightness that Becca was looking for. The white cabinets look bright and crisp now.

Becca-After-Paint-(Living-Space)

Here is the dining room after the change in paint color. It looks so different, doesn’t it? She hasn’t changed any furniture, added any new art, pillows or accessories, and it is already 80% done. Painting your home is a fantastic bang for your buck. Becca-Before-Dining-Room

Becca-After-Dining-RoomWith just three simple changes: new wall color, new cabinet color and new drapes, Becca has transformed her space. If she wanted to continue on and take it another step, I would recommend she bring in some fresh pillows to brighten up the leather couches and bring in some pattern and color that makes her happy. I am sending her some pillow combination options and will hopefully be back soon to share those with you.
